HBS Club of Japan is
pleased to announce our 2006 Entrepreneur of the Year: Mr. Takashi Sakamoto.
Born in 1940, Mr.
Takashi Sakamoto is one of the very few Japanese who started early in his career
with a vibrant entrepreneurial spirit. His company: Bookoff Corporation
Ltd. (http://www.bookoff.co.jp/) is
largest secondhand bookstore in Japan with over 60% market share.
Since he started the company in 1991, the company has expanded into
selling secondhand CDs, videos, games, PCs and clothing. Bookoff made an
IPO on TSE2 in 2001 and moved up to TSE1 in March 2005.
The company has over 900 stores and over 6,000 employees.

Mr. Sakamoto’s
biography
After graduating from
Keio University with a BA in Law in 1963, Mr. Sakamoto joined his father’s
barley processing company. He then
started a formula feed company together with Zen-Noh (Japan Agriculture) to
which he became a Director. In
1969, Mr. Sakamoto started an audio shop, which ultimate failed. He
then went on to selling secondhand pianos.
In 1990, Mr. Sakamoto started the Bookoff business.
In the 1991, he established Bookoff Corporation Ltd.
Bookoff did an IPO on TSE2 in March 2004 and then went to TSE1 on March
2005. Today, the Bookoff group
generates JPY 41.5 billion in Sales with 909 stores including 551 franchise
stores throughout Japan with over 500 employees and 5,500 part-timers.
Six of these stores are overseas in Hawaii, New York, Los Angeles, Paris
and Vancouver.
